Taxes

Every year hubby and I get screwed on our taxes.  We both have good jobs and don’t have any dependents for tax breaks.  I try to donate which helps and last year I was able to deduct all of our medical expenses.  I was complaining to my friend at work – she is our number cruncher.  As I was talking I noticed a funny expression on her face.  She said “not to be insensitive but you know that you can claim Gavin on your taxes this year.”   I totally didn’t believe her but it’s true.  Any baby born alive (even if only for a moment) that has a birth/death certificate and/or a SSN can be claimed.  Kind of weird to think about but I will take the refund!

  1. Yup, stillbirths don't count (the degree to which they don't exist medically or to government is kinda surprising actually), but born alive and they count for that year.

Hope that counting him on your taxes not only gets you some money back, but also helps make the feeling that he was real even stronger. Does it get much more real than the IRS?

    1. I wish Stillbirths counted also. It's not fair.

It does make it more real and I actually like seeing his name on official documents. It makes me happy to acknowledge him.

  2. We're claiming Isaac too. Part of me feels a little guilty, but I figure that money will definitely help with fertility treatments.

  3. do it. take it. we did. and it really, really helped us out, esp. since we're kind of in the same situation as you are. I took it as another opportunity to validate I's and J's existence. one more official record for them to be on.

  4. I had no idea you could do that. I guess every little bit helps. ((Hugs))

  5. I didn't know you could do that either, but why not? We always get screwed on our taxes too. I used to look forward to filing, but not anymore.

  6. Yeah...our taxes always suck because of lack of dependents. I feel you.

  7. Makes sense! I think it's great that you're able to include him as a dependent - afterall he is a part of your family

  8. Yes, we thought about that after our son was stillborn. Its kind of a kick in the gut that our son never "existed" because he didn't get a birth, death or SSN.
